What Hollywood Should Learn From ‘Logan’s R Rating

When Logan arrives on Blu-ray next week, it will include one of the better bonus features in recent home entertainment history: A black and white cut of the film called Logan Noir, which made its premiere last night at a special screening at Brooklyn’s Alamo Drafthouse. The Noir cut looks great, but the real story coming out of last night’s event wasn’t the new version, it was a comment made by director James Mangold during the post-screening Q&A.

10 Lingering Questions We Have After ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 reigned supreme at the box office last weekend, earning $145 million in its first days of U.S. release. The movie also garnered solid reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore. People dig it. We did too! But that doesn’t mean it didn’t leave us with a couple lingering questions, both about some of the film’s finer plot points, and about what they mean for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s ten of the things we’re still thinking about after #GOTG2.

‘T2 Trainspotting’ Is the Ultimate 2017 Movie

There are a lot of freeze-frames in T2 Trainspotting. To an inattentive viewer, they might look like empty style for style’s sake, or a nod back to the flashy visuals and hyperkinetic editing of the original Trainspotting from 20 years ago. But the freeze-frames also turn the film’s subtext into text. T2 is about a group of immature men coming to grips with the fact that they are getting older. The freeze-frames — along with a steady stream of flashbacks — enable the film to do the very thing the characters wish they could do, but can’t: Stop the inexorable march of time, and even, for brief moments, turn back the clock to their youths.

Netflix Says Users Have Watched 500 Million Hours of Adam Sandler Movies

One of Netflix’s biggest deals so far in the original movie space was with Adam Sandler, who signed on to make four films with the streaming service, and then recently re-upped with the online media titan for another four masterpieces. Maybe you have seen some of their collaborations so far, The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over, and the just-released Sandy Wexler. If the figures Netflix just released are accurate, the odds are you have.

Everything That Happened at Star Wars Celebration’s 40th Anniversary Panel

For those of us who are old enough to remember the original Star Wars trilogy in its initial release, the fact that this May 25 marks the 40th anniversary of the first film’s release is absolutely staggering. (Want to feel old? This is what Darth Vader looked like 40 years ago.)

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says There Will Be Another ‘Terminator’ Movie (And Another ‘Conan’ and ‘Twins’)

There have been a lot of rumors swirling in recent weeks about the state of The Terminator franchise. First there was word that Paramount had removed a possible sixth Terminator (and a direct sequel to 2015’s Terminator Genisys) from its schedule. Then the head of Skydance, who holds the rights to the characters, said in an interview that a major announcement about the series’ future was coming some time this year. So what’s the truth?

Frank Oz Won’t Say Whether Yoda’s in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

If you thought things around Star Wars would get less secretive now that the notoriously unforthcoming J.J. Abrams wasn’t directing things, think again. Even knowing what we know about Star Wars: The Last Jedi based on the events of Abrams’ The Force Awakens, there might be even more uncertainly around Rian Johnson’s eighth episode in the Star Wars saga.

The Five Most Dated Parts of the First ‘X-Men’

It boggles my mind that it’s been almost 17 years since the very first X-Men opened in theaters. Where did that time go? There was one X-Men movie, I blinked, and then there were 10. It’s like some crazy time paradox; maybe when I wasn’t paying attention Hugh Jackman went back in time and stopped Jennifer Lawrence from killing Peter Dinklage.

‘A Ghost Story’ Review: A Totally New Kind of Haunted House Movie

If people were ever scared of the image of a ghost as a big white sheet with two black eyeholes those days are long gone. Today, the image is a total joke; the go-to costume for lazy children everywhere. One of the most amazing things about David Lowery’s A Ghost Story — and there are a few amazing things about this audacious movie — is the way it imbues that cliched ghost with renewed horror and even poignance. You will never look at that ghost emoji the same way again.

William Peter Blatty, Writer of ‘The Exorcist,’ Dies at 89

No list of the greatest horror movies ever made is complete without 1973’s The Exorcist. The film was directed by William Friedkin and based on the novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty, who adapted his own book to the screen and won an Oscar for his screenplay. Sadly, Blatty passed away yesterday at the age of 89. Friedkin himself tweeted about the news a short while ago:
