‘Office Christmas Party’ Review: A Comedic Lump of Coal

Too many Hollywood comedies, Office Christmas Party included, seem to expend all their creativity in the casting office. Filmmakers assemble these impressive lineups acting talent — and Office Christmas Party has as good a collection of actors as any comedy this year — and then sets them adrift in dumb stories with no jokes, hoping their evident charisma and endless improvisations will deliver enough laughs to fill out a decent trailer. The people in this movie are funny, but the movie would be a lot funnier if it gave those people some clever material to perform.

As If We All Haven’t Been Through Enough Already, Paramount Delays ‘Baywatch’ One Week

2016 has already been a bastard of a year: beloved public figures died, Nazis became a thing again, America began its slow skid into fascism, and Bones got cancelled. When do the hits stop coming? Is there no respite from the barrage of tragedies that this monstrous year has heaped upon us? No, no there is not. Because throughout the seemingly unending cluster-F-word of 2016, one light on the horizon has held us up, both as a nation and as a human species. From indignity to indignity, we’ve always been able to pin our hopes on the glorious day of May 19, 2017 — known to you and I, of course, as the release date for the Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson-led reboot of beloved ‘90s lifeguard soap opera Baywatch. But even after this year’s parade of tragedies, [Don LaFontaine voice] there is one tragedy more.

‘Suicide Squad’ Concept Art Proves That Jared Leto’s Joker Could’ve Been Way Worse

Jared Leto’s gritty ’n grilled take on the Clown Prince of Crime was easily the most controversial part of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Early photos of Leto’s tatted-up Joker drew heavy criticism from fans and launched a million jokes on social media, where he was compared to everything from a Juggalo to a Hot Topic mascot — and that was before we found out about his wacky on-set “method acting” antics, which permanently cemented his status as a ridiculous human being. But if you thought that version of the Joker was obnoxious, boy do we have some concept art for you.

Daisy Ridley Says ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Already Revealed Rey’s Parents

One of the biggest questions we were left with at the end of The Force Awakens, aside from “Do you think Luke makes his own organic soap out there on that space island?” was “Who the heck are Rey’s parents?” It’s a question that won’t be answered in the Star Wars universe until Episode VIII hits theaters late next year…unless you’re a real smarty-pants like Daisy Ridley.

‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ Trailer Is Here, and We Hope Optimus Is Okay

It’s big, it’s loud, it’s here: feast your eyes on the first trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight! After a truly weird production period that involved dragons, King Arthur, igniting the ire of British vets by dressing up Winston Churchill’s childhood home as a Nazi headquarters, and the usual level of Bayhem, we finally have our very first glimpse of the fifth installment in the inexplicably popular franchise.

George Lucas Saw ‘Rogue One’ and Liked It, So Gareth Edwards Had the Best Weekend

When a director inherits a franchise from another more seasoned, more beloved filmmaker, there’s bound to be some anxiety about whether or not their predecessor will like the finished project. Did I get it right? they ask themselves. Did I do their legacy justice? Gareth Edwards, still pretty new to the blockbuster scene after taking the reins of 2014’s franchise starter/reviver Godzilla, has some galaxy-sized shoes to fill as the director of the upcoming Star Wars anthology film Rogue One. But he doesn’t have to worry too much anymore, because George Lucas has seen the movie, and given it his hearty blessing.

This ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Promo Art May or May Not Be Legit, But It’s Definitely Awesome

There are several reasons to be stoked about Thor: Ragnarok, including — but not limited to — Taika Waititi, Cate Blanchett, Planet Hulk, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson and that rad retro logo design. A new image, purported to be leaked promo art for the Thor sequel, has been making the rounds on social media today, and although its legitimacy is slightly questionable, there’s absolutely no doubt that A. it’s totally in keeping with the retro aesthetic of the Ragnarok logo and B. it looks badass.

God Is a Woman of Color (and Has an Oscar!) in the Trailer for ‘The Shack’

What does God look like? It’s an eternal question with which fiction has tussled on plenty of occasions, from the standard-issue “bearded white guy clad in flowing robe” to the off-beat “wordless flower child Alanis Morisette” to the factually accurate “Morgan Freeman chilling.” The upcoming faith-based drama The Shack takes a rather unusual tack in its depiction of the Lord; the film adapted from William P. Young’s best-selling novel splits the divine presence into the Trinity, with Jesus Christ as a carpenter of Middle Eastern descent, the Holy Spirit as a meek Asian-American woman named Sarayu, and God portrayed by none other than Octavia goddamn Spencer. Let the record show — God’s real, she’s black, and she’s got an Oscar.

James Gunn Wants You to Know He’s Worked Real Real Hard on ‘Guardians Vol. 2’

Dangerous business, making trailers these days. When a beloved franchise unveils the first look at its latest installment, they can be sure that the devoted fanbase will go through each and every frame with a fine-toothed comb, on the hunt for any context-free images that may hint at a new character, location, or plot development. In the worst cases, a trailer becomes a maddening game of keep away between the editor cutting it and the fans itching to strip-mine it for spoilers. James Gunn, as he’s readied the first trailer for his upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, has had to learn this the hard way.

That ‘Escape From New York’ Remake Doesn’t Sound Like Much of a Remake at All

A remake of Escape From New York has been in development for years, but when Fox hired Luther creator Neil Cross to write the screenplay last fall, it seemed like the project was finally picking up some legitimate steam. It’s been over a year since we last heard anything about the remake of John Carpenter’s cult classic, but a new report has revealed several key plot details from the film — which doesn’t sound like much of a remake at all.

Amy Schumer to Play ‘Barbie’ in Live-Action Movie, So Now We Know What to Expect

Sony’s live-action Barbie movie project has had a bit of a bumpy development process, initially hiring Diablo Cody to pen the screenplay (yay!) before tossing it out (boo!) and hiring three more (!) writers to deliver competing screenplays (huh?) — leaving us with little idea of what to expect from this wacky film. That drastically changed today, as Amy Schumer has officially been cast in the title role in the Barbie movie, which has an official screenplay and everything.

‘The LEGO Batman Movie Poster’ Is Packed With Bat-Friends and Foes

Looks like little LEGO Batman has put his ego aside (well, sort of) in the new poster for The LEGO Batman Movie, which features several famous Bat-villains and a handful of friends — does LEGO Batman actually have friends? Seems like he’d probably view them all as acquaintances that he regards with passive ambivalence, at best. Either way, you can kill a few minutes on this day that is definitely not Friday yet by seeing if you can name all the characters featured on this new poster.
