The world is filled with terrible news, so it’s nice for us to find a story with a happy ending once in awhile.  Not that type of happy ending. Pervert. Here is an amazing story about a Swedish man who was stranded in a snow drift for 61 days.

Snowmobilers came across the car thinking it was wreckage. They peeked inside to find someone wrapped in a sleeping bag in the back seat.  Rescuers dug the 45-year-old man out of the car, and he was so weak he could hardly speak–yet alone explain what happened.  He said he’s been in the car since December 19th. Probably hiding out so he didn’t have to buy his family Christmas gifts. The man survived by eating snow and icicles.

Humans can last up to four weeks without food, so its plausible that the man was stranded for as long as he said he was.  His body temperature was around 31 degrees Celsius when he was brought into the hospital.  With his body temperature so low, he wasn’t using much energy.  This also helped him to survive. Like bears, humans can also go into a dormant-like state (especially during football season).

Conan O’Brien is pretty hard to miss, due to his 6’4 frame and bright orange pompadour. So if you happened to be watching ‘How I Met Your Mother’ last night and thought you spotted the late-night host for a brief moment in the background of the gang’s favorite bar, you certainly weren’t imagining things.

Before the show aired Monday, ‘HIMYM’ star Neil Patrick Harris gave his Twitter followers a hint that something like this was brewing.

“Watch the new episode of HIMYM tonight and try to spot the awesomest of dudes randomly hanging out at MacLaren’s. #dontblink,” Harris tweeted.

In fact, if you caught Harris’ appearance on ‘Conan’ last June, you would’ve known that an O’Brien cameo was coming. During their chat, the two revealed that Conan had won a walk-on role on ‘HIMYM’ in a charity auction they had both attended. When the show’s producers heard that it was Conan who out bid everybody for the prize, they wanted to expand the role from the cameo it had been offered as.

However, Conan told them he thought it would be funnier if it remained a brief un-credited walk on. So that’s the story behind Conan’s very short stint on ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ Check it out below, courtesy of HuffPo.

Facing huge budget shortfalls, the United States Postal Service has proposed solutions including closing hundreds of post offices and eliminating Saturday deliveries. Now it may be considering jacking up the price of stamps, too.

The popularity of internet services like online bill pay have led in part to a 1.7 percent decline in mail volume, causing the USPS to anticipate losing $14.1 billion in 2012 — with bigger losses expected in the years to come.

In response, postal officials sent a letter to Congress last Thursday in which they recommended several changes, including the possibility of increasing the price of a stamp from its current 45 cents up to 50 cents. While stamp prices have gone up four times since 2006, chief financial officer Joe Corbett said, “Clearly, we’re [still] underpriced [and] would like the ability to move that price up.”

The USPS says the extra nickel, which would likely be added in one or two-cent increments until 2015, would raise revenues by $1 billion annually. Although taxpayers don’t foot the bill to keep the postal service running, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe told Congress that failing to help the organization limit its losses would result in a “long-term burden to the American taxpayer.”

American Mustache Institute

When someone grows a mustache, all of society benefits, since the visually pleasing facial hair is now on display for all to see. Yet the costs of maintaining a proper lip sweater falls only on the mustachioed individual.

The fine folks at the American Mustache Institute want to change this. So they recently proposed the “Stimulus To Allow Critical Hair Expenses,” or the STACHE ACT, which awards a $250 tax credit to every mustached American. They are also calling for a Million Mustache March in support of the act that will take place in Washington DC on April 1st. (Yup, always a bit suspicious.)

The AMI, who partnered with H&R Block on the proposal, even  drew up a white paper on why the STACHE act is necessary. Here is its summery:

In summary, the grooming habits of Mustached Americans are a clear example of financial, social and environmental responsibility—the triple bottom line. It is appropriate that Congress allow a limited number of deductions to people of Mustached American heritage in recognition of the value that their lifestyle provides to the economy, to society, and to the environment.

The revitalized Van Halen are ready to light up the sky with their current tour. Even though the trek is just kicking into gear, they are already changing things up a bit. At last night’s show at The Palace Of Auburn Hills in Michigan, they dug deep into the old kit bag and pulled out ‘Girl Gone Bad.’

This obscure gem from the ’1984′ album planted itself right in the middle of a, shall we say, diggin-the-chicks section of the show with ‘Women In Love’ preceding and ‘Beautiful Girls’ following. The crowd was obviously wowed.

From what we can gather, the band hasn’t played this particular song in concert since the ’1984′ tour. It appears that the boys have been making a conscious effort to swap a song or two from night to night to keep things interesting and keep the fans guessing as to what buried treasure they might unearth on any given night — bravo to them for that. Rick Silva, the head of Checkers and Rally’s drive-in restaurants was featured on the latest episode of ‘Undercover Boss.’ Like the other sneaky bosses before him, the CEO donned a disguise and pretended he was just a lowly employee, in this case at a Checkers’ franchise in Homestead, Florida. And it was also the first case of a boss breaking his cover and shutting down the workplace on the spot. 

During his undercover stint, Silva became bothered by the restaurant’s managers treatment of a fry cook named Todd. Not only did the manager, known only as “Stevens,” berate Todd harshly, but he threatened to take the employee outside and beat him if he didn’t work harder.

Shocked by Stevens’ tone, Silva asked to speak with him outside. First, Stevens explained that he had to scream at his staff or they wouldn’t listen. Then he began to question why Silva had the right to question him on how he handles his workers.

Silva tried to remain in character, but when Stevens continued to press him on his credentials he finally snapped

“I have been in the restaurant business for over 20 years. And I’ve been in the fast food business for over 20 years. I’m CEO for this company,” Silva explained.

Stevens was understandably crestfallen by this revelation. Silva was so angry about what he had seen that he shut the restaurant down on the spot. But don’t worry, it was reopened the next day with a new manager, so nobody lost their job. In fact, Silva even retained Stevens, who was ordered to undergo more job training. Virgin Galactic

Last month Virgin Galactic announced it would begin offering commercial space flights later this year.

The two-and-a-half hour trip just cracks the space barrier and offers about five minutes of weightlessness. It also comes with a fairly prohibitive price tag of $200,000 a pop.

But let’s say money was no object. Would you want to be among the first commercial space travelers?

Poll Position asked 1,145 adults that very question and found that only 23 percent thought the thrill of the great beyond outweighed the risks. Fifty-two percent said they would not be willing to take such a flight and 26 percent had no opinion.

Jazz FM listeners who normally tune in for smooth sounds instead heard some rough stuff when a UK station’s ‘Funky Sensation’ program played the full audio from a pornographic movie over the airwaves this weekend.

Station representatives were light on details as to who or what caused the gaffe, claiming it was the result of “unauthorized access to the live feed.” Jazz FM Program Director Mike Vitti promised swift punishment for the unnamed culprit and said listeners should expect an apology (sans explicit grunting) when they tune in this weekend.

Vitti originally tweeted on Saturday that the unintended broadcast was “a major hack into the feed” and that station engineers were investigating.

State lawmakers in Indiana were recently presented with a resolution to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts organization and honor the positive influence the group has had on American women. Representative Bob Morris, a Republican from Fort Wayne, was the only representative to refuse to sign, citing a belief that the Girl Scouts is a “radicalized organization.”

The Indiana lawmaker sent a letter to his colleagues saying he plans to pull his daughters from their Girl Scout troop after he found information online claiming that the group “sexualizes” girls and promotes homosexuality. One source he cited was a conservative “news” website called World Net Daily.

In his letter, he claimed to have found allegations that the Girl Scouts are actually a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood that encourages the girls to have sex. He continued to say that the people who the Girl Scouts consider to be role models are all “feminists, lesbians, or Communists.”

He also mentioned an allegation that the organization allows transgender females to join. This misstatement of the facts was most likely based on a situation that arose last fall when a transgender male child was refused membership in a Colorado troop, but then allowed to join by the national organization, which encourages inclusiveness.

The scouts have received criticism for this inclusiveness and many groups and websites have been working very hard to “expose” them. Diane Tipton, president of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital said in response, “Misinformation is passing as fact. The Girl Scout organization does not take a position on abortion or birth control, and these topics are not part of the Girl Scout program or our materials. We believe these matters are best discussed by girls with their families.”

At this time, the Girl Scouts are not planning any changes in policy, but they have released a statement explaining where they stand on sensitive issues.

Theft charges serious enough to warrant a jury trial typically involve stolen goods that are pretty expensive (just ask Lindsay Lohan about that).

But you don’t have to steal high-dollar stuff to get in that kind of trouble — in fact, a New Mexico college student is about to go on trial for allegedly forgetting to pay for a $2 pumpkin.

Lauren Medina, 23, will have her day in court on Tuesday. She’s accused of stealing the small gourd from a local pumpkin patch in October.

But her sister, Annette Atencio, says the whole thing was a big misunderstanding that’s been completely overblown. On that fateful day last year, the two siblings had enjoyed a day at the pumpkin patch, spending $75 on funnel cakes and other food. When they left, Medina simply forgot to pay for the pumpkin, Atencio says.

When police approached them, Atencio maintains her sister apologized and immediately offered to pony up the cash, but the cops refused and “she was handcuffed immediately — end of story, no ifs or buts.”

After Medina was given an order to appear in court, she thought the charges would be dropped. Instead, prosecutors gave her the option of pleading guilty and doing probation — and when she refused, the case was remanded to trial.

Atencio is infuriated by the debacle, especially because her sister has never been in trouble with the law before. “I’m in disbelief,” she said. “The more I talk about it, the angrier I get.”

A new Nielsen poll finds smartphones are becoming less of a luxury and more of a so-called necessity — at least for younger people.

Nielsen gathered data to learn more about the age, income and demographics of the typical US smartphone user. Specifically, the firm wanted to know if lower prices are making the devices more popular among those who earn less money.

Turns out more than half of people between 18 and 24 who make less than $15,000 per year are smartphone owners, compared to 43 percent of those aged 25 to 34 and just 31 percent of folks between 35 and 44 years old.

While researchers don’t know if the people surveyed, especially those in the younger group, have outside financial help (parents, spouses, etc.), it’s clear that even the respondents on limited budgets are making room for smartphone ownership.

But what researchers found most interesting is that although the younger set deems the devices a necessity, older people consider them more of a luxury — which is valuable information for developers, publishers and advertisers.

Never one to promote certainty, the members of Guns N’ Roses have once again left fans wondering if a full reunion is likely or even possible when they’re inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April. Slash doesn’t deny Dizzy Reed’s claim that the band is getting back together for one night in Cleveland, but he hardly confirms it.

“I know that there’s a lot of rumor about it, as always when it comes to GNR, out there on the Internet and stuff, but as it stands right this second, I have no idea what’s going on,” the guitarist said in an interview with Mike Jones of Washington D.C. rock radio station DC101.

The band is being recognized on April 14, and Reed got longtime fans excited last week by saying the entire original band — including Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, Steven Adler and Slash — would be present. Reed, Matt Sorum and Gilby Clarke joined later.

“I know that all the original band is going to be there, I don’t know exactly what’s going to go down,” Reed told Billboard. “It’s one of those things I’m sure will all come together and be really cool. I’m just going to go in with a good attitude and a clear head and a grateful heart.”

Slash’s deflection of the question is a step up from his angry denial in December. The guitarist did say that he was honored to be included in this class, which includes Donovan, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys and others. “It was very flattering to get that initial phone call to say we were nominated,” he said adding that finding out the band was being inducted was a cherry on an already delicious sundae.

Let’s face it, we all hate getting called to jury duty. We all have heard all the creative ways to get out of it. A 29-year-old Florida resident Jacob Jock took it a bit too far when he decided to send a Facebook friend request to the defendant hoping this would lead to a dismissal.

The good news for Jacob – he was dismissed from the jury. The bad news is he got three days in jail after being found to be in criminal contempt of court. In retrospect, it was probably a bad idea to post the following on Facebook after getting out of jury duty,

“Score … I got dismissed!! apparently they frown upon sending a friend request to the defendant … haha.”

While serving his three-day sentence, we pray that Jacob doesn’t get ‘Poked’ by any new friends he meets in the system.

After Ronnie James Dio died in May 2010, Judas Priest‘s Rob Halford, Black Sabbath‘s Geezer Butler and other members of the hard rock/heavy metal community were quick to express their appreciation in public for the powerful, pint-size singer.

A belated Dio tribute came from a rather unlikely source on Feb. 17 when alt-country star Ryan Adams busted out a solo acoustic cover of ‘Holy Diver’ during his concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

In a clip now available on the Internet, Adams – holding a red, white and blue acoustic guitar – jokes with the audience about his show running overtime. Quickly changing gears, he says, “I mean this from the bottom of my heart. This man who wrote this song … is just a genius and like a blindingly good person.”

The crowd remains quiet at first as Adams starts the song on his guitar, but once he sings the tune’s title (and opening words), there’s a smattering of applause. At first, Adams alternates from single-note picking and chord strumming, then shifts to full-on strumming as he picks up the tempo.

In the latter part of the performance, Adams prompts a few laughs when he says, “If Warren DeMartini was going to come out, this would be the perfect part right here.” Metal aficionados know it was longtime Def Leppard member Vivian Campbell — not DeMartini, who found fame with Ratt — who played on ‘Holy Diver,’ but Adams can be forgiven for taking liberties with his choice of renowned metal guitarists.

Hey, here’s a thought: If there’s room (and still time), why not have Adams contribute to the forthcoming star-studded Dio tribute album?

Over the last few months, there has been some data that suggests the sluggish economy could be improving. Mainly, the unemployment rate, which has dropped to 8.3 percent after reaching a 26-year high of 10 percent in late 2009. However, according to a new survey from Poll Postion, the public is split on whether America is entering into a period of economic recovery.

Thirty-eight percent of the 1,242 registered voters polled said the economy is improving while another 38 percent said it was still deteriorating. Twenty-two percent believe the economy is staying the same.

What political party the respondent belongs to seemed to have a big influence on their economic views. Sixty-eight percent of democrats believe the economy is getting better, whereas 53 percent of republicans think it continues to get worse. Political independents surveyed tended to agree with the republicans.

Mickelson hit his tee shot on the 15th hole wide and to the left when the ball careened into the gallery and bounced up the shorts of the onlooker.

The victim of this amazing accident didn’t get hurt. In fact, he got some free stuff out of it. He received a signed golf glove from Mickelson, a story to tell for the rest of his life, and now he’s a YouTube star among the ranks of Rebecca Black. Who could ask for anything more?

Freelancing allows you to make money on your own terms without permanent employment, but it also means you don’t have access to certain perks like group insurance, administrative support and job growth assistance. Though, since a reported 30 percent of the US workforce is now freelance, that has changed.

A group called Freelancers Union is just one of many organizations whose mission is to help freelancers have access to the same perks that full-time employees receive. For example, a member of the Freelancers Union can pay a standard employee premium and receive the same kind of insurance coverage he would have in a full-time position. The union also has a job board members can use to connect with possible employers.

Other sites like Elance.com, freelancer.com and odesk.com also give freelancers a place to post profiles, find opportunities for work and even download paperwork and contracts to use. Now, even local chambers of commerce and job assistance programs can help freelancers access opportunities, benefits and administrative support.

No longer does freelancing mean you are navigating the business world on your own. Small businesses are what will keep our economy growing, and supporting the smallest of small businesses benefits everyone.
