One ‘Last Jedi’ Poster Seems to Claim It’ll Have The Biggest Reveal in ‘Star Wars’ History

Because Disney and Lucasfilm are, by now, experts at releasing only as scant an amount of information as they want to, we know next to nothing about Star Wars: The Last Jedi. We know who’s in it, and who most of them will be playing, and that Mark Hamill finally has lines this time, but aside from that, it’s all a big mystery. There are a few big questions raised in The Force Awakens that Last Jedi will have to address, one way or another, but a new Japanese poster suggests that the movie is going to drop a pretty huge bombshell — the hugest in Star Wars history, no less.

The folks at Star Wars News Net translated one of The Last Jedi’s Japanese posters, which states right at the top: “The Most Shocking Truth In Star Wars History Will Soon Be Revealed!” Some nuance may be lost in translation (the words for “shocking” and “truth” could each be translated to mean slightly different words, according to io9, which may slightly change the meaning of the sentence) but the statement is still there that this movie will have a pretty big reveal.

It won’t be easy to one-up “I am your father” — arguably, it’s impossible — but there are a few directions this could take. We know that parentage is big in Star Wars, and Rey’s family is still a mystery, so that could come to light in this movie. But the problem is that, given the precedent set by The Empire Strikes Back, we’re already expecting it. The fan theories have taken any and all forms in the two years since The Force Awakens was released. I bet there’s a YouTuber out there who thinks Rey’s mom is Maz Kanata. They might even be right!

Another reason for some shocking reveal is Luke Skywalker’s strange statement in the trailer: “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” That raised more than a few eyebrows, and whatever reason he, who for decades actually has been the last Jedi, could have to abolish it could have some shocking implications. There’s a chance that this movie could get into the weirder, more esoteric branches of Star Wars lore, and become a study on why the Force has a Light Side and a Dark Side. Rey could be the first gray Jedi, serving neither side above the other.

Whatever it is, don’t expect to find out anytime soon. Disney and Lucasfilm guard their secrets like a Hutt guarding his finances.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15.
