When you take a gig singing the national anthem before a major public event, you're inviting all kinds of criticism — as Jamie Foxx is currently learning firsthand following his performance prior to the heavily hyped title fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao on May 2.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" has a way of shining a bright spotlight on a singer's strengths and weaknesses, and we've seen plenty of brilliant performances as well as some that will live forever in infamy; sadly, Foxx's rendition landed somewhere on the latter end of the spectrum, and after he finished, social media erupted in a chorus of catcalls.

CNN reports that Foxx experienced some technical difficulties in the ring, and had to remove his earpiece shortly after he started singing — not that it mattered much to the folks at home, who used him as a punching bag of their own. The report gathers some of the funniest and/or most outspoken critiques of the performance, including a caps-infused tweet from Kiss co-founder Paul Stanley.

Stanley, of course, is well acquainted with the demands of the national anthem, having performed it before a Dodgers game during the 2013 season (you can check out his version below). But after his decades in showbiz, Stanley's also well acquainted with how easily things can go awry onstage — it takes a special kind of singer, after all, to earn a bootleg devoted entirely to his between-song banter. Everyone has their bad days at the office, right?
