The music world has lost another great. Rock and roll icon Chuck Berry has passed away at the age of 90.

According to the St. Charles County Police Department, Berry passed away Saturday afternoon (March 18) in the St. Louis area. An immediate cause of death was not revealed, but the St. Charles PD’s posting revealing the death can be viewed below.

Berry came to fame in the early days of rock and roll as a singer, guitarist and songwriter, creating such classic songs as “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Rock and Roll Music” and “Johnny B. Goode.” He is credited with developing the R&B elements that catapulted rock and roll into the commercial mainstream in the ’50s. Ever the showman, his “duck walk” was also one of the most recognized stage moves.

Berry received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1984, was saluted as part of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2000 and was part of the 1986 induction class for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Berry’s 60th birthday celebration was captured in the classic 1986 documentary, Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Our condolences to the Chuck Berry family.
